Another interruption in services

This was another avoidable failure. It appears the slave dns server hasn't been running for 24 days. The server was rebooted 24 days ago and, due to a conflict in the dns config between the person who owns the server and my dns config, the dns server did not start with the system. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until something went wrong.

Then I woke up to beeping coming from my computer. Somebody was trying to talk to me on IRC chat. I got out of bed since it was like 10:30 AM and I should be getting up. They were saying my dns is down so I went and checked things out. I fixed the problem with both servers and checked the query logs to see how long I was down.

Almost 6 hours. That was how long the primary dns server was not serving dns. I say it like that cause the uptime on that machine is 229 days. But for some reason BIND was not running. The system was not overly clogged so this doesn't appear to be the same issue it had last time. There's nothing in the dns server logs, nor in the system logs. It just died. I'm glad it didn't happen during the week.

Dave,

It seems that the servers are down again.

I tried to use email to contact you, but the message said email did not go through.

Yes, same issue. BIND on free1/2 shut itself down mysteriously. But this time free3 was functional so you should have had no problems. Make sure your domains are pointing to free3 and check www.dnsreport.com to make sure free3 is serving your domain's records.

free1/2 is working again.

It happened again. I still have no idea why BIND is shutting itself down. I've shutdown named statistics logging since it has been misbehaving for a long time now. I've also added a quick cron job to attempt to start BIND every hour so that the problem will correct itself if it should occur again.

This time the server appears to have been down for an entire day. The service has been really sucky lately, I know. Until I figure out what is shutting down BIND and get a second server up, I can't guarantee anything. I'll keep you informed.

EDIT:
I should also remind everybody to consider using a slave to the DollarDNS server(s) to make your domain stable despite how cranky my dns server gets. There is one thing that makes DollarDNS unique and excellent since the day it started, and that is total control over your DNS down to editing the zone file by hand. If your DNS needs are basic, then other services like www.everydns.net may be more valuable to you.
